Course Content:
The curriculum provides sergeants, detectives and patrol officers with enhanced investigative skills, strengthened interagency collaboration, reinforced legal compliance, and best practices in contemporary criminal investigations. This five-day probe will provide practical instruction from experienced detectives, supervisors, legal professionals and other partner agencies. At the end of the training, students will be able to:
- Identify evidence and preserve chain of custody.
- Understand how to coordinate with forensic personnel.
- Understand supervisory responsibilities at major crime scenes.
- Review search warrant and understand the exceptions to a search warrant.
- Manage and document confidential informants.
- The proper use of License Plate Readers (LPR), Star Chase technology and the legal considerations.
- Understand how to gather and disseminate intelligence to the right agencies.
- Case deconfliction and interagency coordination.
- Witness and suspect interview/interrogations, including trauma-informed interviewing.
- Behavioral cues and credibility assessments.
- Understand the recording requirements and the legal safeguards used when interviewing.
- Complete a clear and defensible criminal investigation report.
- Case file organization.
- Photo arrays, line-ups, avoiding suggestiveness and proper documentation for prosecutorial success.
- Cold cases.
- Juvenile matters and domestic violence cases.
- Court room procedures and effective courtroom testimony preparation.
- Legal updates as they pertain to criminal investigations.
Who should attend? This training is ideal for all supervisors, detectives and patrol officers who work criminal investigations or aspire to work criminal investigations during their career.
