Digital Forensic Investigations Training

This intensive 5-day course is designed to provide law enforcement officers who have at least basic computer literacy with the skills and tools necessary to conduct digital forensics investigations in criminal cases. Attendees of the course will be able to identify and properly handle, preserve, and transport digital evidence, understand and apply legal standards for digital evidence searches & seizures in police investigations, gain knowledge of the forensic tools used to acquire and examining data from electronic devices, analyze data using forensic software in police investigations, and be able to properly document their findings of digital evidence accurately in police reports.

Course Content

  • The curriculum covers a wide range of topics essential for successful digital investigations:​
  • Digital evidence and 4th Amendment overview legal framework
  • Types of digital evidence
  • Evidence detection, handling, packaging, and logging
  • Types of storage devices, file systems and metadata
  • Forensic imaging overview and creating a forensic image of a USB drive
  • Hashing and verification
  • Formatting, file recovery, and using “right blockers”
  • Types of extractions
  • Introduction to mobile forensic tools (Cellebrite, Magnet, GrayKey)
  • Logical extractions from Android/iPhone
  • Review of call logs, message, location history
  • Synthetic media and AI (detecting deep fakes)
  • Downloading and examining video evidence
  • How to properly document digital forensic investigations findings
  • Communicating technical evidence to non-technical audiences

Practical Experience

  • Participants will engage in hands-on, real-time practical exercises throughout the course. These exercises include:​
  • Tagging, photographing and documenting digital items.
  • Formatting, File recovery, and using “right blockers”
  • Logical extraction from Android/iPhone
  • Review of call logs, messages, and location history
  • Downloading and examining video evidence using forensic software
