NEW COURSE-White Collar Crime Investigation

White Collar Crime Investigation

June 2-4, 2010

This course will examine the various types of white-collar offenses and explore how and why such crimes are committed. The course will also explore the various laws used to combat such offenses and consider some of the investigative techniques used to identify those engaged in such activity. In addition, the course will explore the profile of the modern white-collar offender and the role of the various federal law enforcement agencies responsible for investigating white-collar crime.


This course will be taught by Ernie Dorling. Mr. Dorling is a six-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He spent almost 27 years in law enforcement both as a police officer in Hollywood, FL and as a federal agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS). On July 1, 2001, Ernie retired from the Defense Department having spent the last 10 years of his career as the Resident Agent in Charge of the Hartford, CT office of the DCIS.

Ernie spent a great deal of his early federal law enforcement career in Atlanta, GA. During his tenure with ATF, he was detailed to the Secret Service during the 1980 presidential campaign providing security for President Carter. In 1984, he was again detailed to the Secret Service providing protection for President Reagan.

In 1986, Ernie went to work for the Defense Criminal Investigative Service in Atlanta. From 1987-1989, he worked in Wiesbaden, Germany conducting white-collar crime investigations in France, England, Greece, Germany and Belgium where he was identified as an expert witness in white-collar crime investigations. From 1989-1991,he worked in Washington D.C. monitoring agency wide investigations dealing with covert operations and matters dealing with fraud and corruption related to the Strategic Defense Initiative.

During his career, Ernie taught analytical techniques for BATF at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, GA. He also worked on multitude of various types of criminal and civil investigations from illegal trafficking in arms; arson; money laundering; health care fraud and government corruption. He has also worked on several high profile murder cases including the case of Alvin and Judith Neelley, the husband and wife who kidnapped and killed several young people in northern Georgia in the 1980s. Ernie is portrayed in the book, Early Graves, by Thomas Cook This case resulted in Judith Neelley becoming the youngest woman in the annals of American justice—at the age of eighteen—to be sentenced to death row.

Ernie has published several professional and academic articles in Police Chief Magazine, Government Executive and Public Administration Review. He is also the author of With Consciousness of Guilt, the Sexual Predator Among Us, published by Iuniverse in January 2001 and Murder: A Family Affair, the true story of the contract killing of Anson Buzz Clinton in Old Lyme, CT in 1994; published by 1stBooks in March 2004.

For the past six years, Ernie Dorling has been an instructor at the Henry Lee School of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences. He previously served as the coordinator of the investigative services concentration within the department.
